One of the most impressive facets of HyperCard resides in its incredible ability to search and find selected data within a given stack in just a few seconds--even if searching in a stack larger than a gigabyte! Such power would be ideally suited to scan through large text banks in order to find bits of data. Such a function would be of immense value in finding instances of specific words in order to establish the greater context of those words. In other words, HyperCard could fulfill, in most cases, more efficiently the role of a concordance. This particular stack is an attempt to utilize the power of HyperCard in such a manner. It is evident that my efforts are still in a nascent stage and that there is much that can be done with the idea. I would appreciate any contributions (not money, but ideas which would increase the functionality of this project) toward the effort! (Note from first release).
This is the second version of the New Testament HyperStack© (let’s call it 1.01). The changes which have been made vastly improve the usefulness of this stack. The search routines have been made substantially more useful thanks to a script written by David Leffler of Apple Computer® in Hypercorner. It is possible to find whole phrases without having to run through the entire stack finding the first word of the stack over and over again. While this new feature will not yet go directly to the phrase, it will go to the screen in which the phrase can be found. Use the “SEARCH” mode described below to find the phrase on any given screen. Next, there is a “CLIP” button which sets the field into an edit mode allowing the user to select portions of the text and place them into the clipboard. From there, the text may be pasted into a text editor or word processor. The “CLIP” button toggles into a “SEARCH” mode which deselects the edit mode and allows the user to mouse-click on a word and find every instance of the selected word in that field by repeatedly hitting the ‘Return’ key. This version also includes a ‘Help’ card to be accessed via the question mark icon. One more word about this version. I have decided to distribute the New Testament HyperStack© in its entirety rather than in two parts since the purpose of the stack seems to require it. If this proves a problem for you, please contact me. Again, I would like to express my thanks to Hank Wade for his technical expertise.
I’ve received several letters from individuals using this stack. Thank-you. It is flattering and encouraging to know that this stack is providing some usefulness. From these letters I have learned that a few third party vendors of public domain and shareware are ‘selling’ this stack. I would like to address all such vendors, BBS’s and any other individuals distributing this stack. Do not distribute this stack without this text intact both within the stack and upon the disk which this stack is on. Do not distribute this stack if you are charging more than $5.00 dollars to cover the cost of duplication, etc. and $2.00 for shipping and etc. No one should pay more than $7.00 total for the provision of this stack, which is an ample amount to cover any reproduction, disk and distribution costs. If you acquire this stack from any source violating these terms, please contact me. I will contact the vendor. NEW TESTAMENT HYPERSTACK© IS FREE. This stack has entailed a great amount of work and has consumed many hours, I therefore reserve the prerogative of determining its cost. Again, THIS STACK IS FREE. Please distribute it as widely and as frequently as possible within these terms. There are only two other things I request. If you use this stack, please drop me a line. If you can make this stack more efficient by better scripting, etc., send me a copy of your improved version. Your contribution for the use of this New Testament HyperStack will be in giving me permission to use your scripts, etc., in the updates to this stack. Naturally, if your ideas have been utilized, I will acknowledge your contributions.
Finally, it seems to me that it is not inappropriate to utilize the same Text (and with perhaps the same reason) that ushered in another invention and another Age: the Holy Scriptures. My gratitude to both J. Gutenberg and B. Atkinson.
